Day 13 – 23 Days of Thanksgiving – What if I stumble?

I was driving home from work this evening when I was reminded of the song “What If I Stumble” by DC Talk. What this video doesn’t have is the opening spoken words heard on the album.

The greatest single cause of atheism in the world today
Is Christians who acknowledge Jesus with their lips
Then walk out the door and deny him by their lifestyle.
That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable.

I’ve often thought about this song and it’s opening lyrics. One of the biggest criticisms of Christianity is that Christians are often seen as hypocrites. And as we read about yesterday, the hypocrite is from the Greek word for actor. Not all accusations are true, but many are. And even the appearance of the hypocrisy can make someone stumble and not believe.

As I wake up each morning and go through my daily life, with it’s trials and struggles as well as it’s many triumphs, I’m reminded that people are watching me. I’m not shy of my faith and many that read this blog, know me personally, so I need to make sure that Jesus is more than just a weekend thing for me, or a way to fulfill my desire to write…but something I live out in my life.

It’s hard. Looking back on my day today, I can think of a few specific instances, where I wasn’t living or acting very Christlike. If someone was watching me, I may have laid a seed of doubt in their minds. It’s those moments I realize why I need a savior. I’m not perfect and can never come close to the the perfection that is required by God.

So what if I stumble? What if by my actions, I make a fool of all Christians in the eyes of that one person that was watching?

Because of God’s grace and his love for us as we are, we have the following lyrics;

I hear You whispering my name [You say]
“My love for you will never change”
