The cup that overflows

overflowing-cupI ran across the story in Matthew 14 where Jesus feeds the 5000. Most have heard the story I’m sure. The focus typically is that Jesus fed 5000 people with just 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish. Pretty amazing stuff really. However, one thing I’ve overlooked in the past happens in verse 20.

They  all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.  -Matthew 14:20

When God provided for this multitude of people, he provided more than enough.  I found this interesting.  When I’ve looked in my own past and the times when God has provided…he never provides “almost” enough.  He rarely provides “just” enough.  Most of the time I can say he has provided “more” than enough.   And often in ways I’ve not expected.

Look at what is written in Psalm 23;

You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
-Psalm 23: 5

Again, when David was in the midst of his enemies.  God provided “more” than enough.  His cup was overflowing.

I started to look around the Bible and I see verse after verse about the overflow or abundance of blessings that God gives.

Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce; then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine.  -Proverbs 3:9-10

Give, and it will be given to you.  Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap.  For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.  -Luke 6:38

You crown the year with your bounty; your wagon tracks overflow with abundance.  The pastures of the wilderness overflow, the hills gird themselves with joy.  -Psalm 65:11-12

“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house.  Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, ” and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.” – Malachi 3:10

These are just a few I found, but the theme is clear to me.  When we obey God and he chooses to bless us, it will be with such abundance that we will not be able to contain all that blessing.  What a great visual.
